The Church of the Transfiguration, Kizhi, Russia
I continued to be amazed and incredulous at the churches in Russia. As our boat moved across Lake Onega before turning towards Moscow, yet another fairy-tale-like church came into view. The Transfiguration Church is Kizhi’s most famous building, dating from 1714. It represents the tendency to give churches very steep roofs to distinguish them from houses. It has an amazing 22 domes. Even more amazing, it was built entirely of wood and without nails except in the domes and roof shingles! It’s one of the tallest wooden buildings in northern Europe.
In 1990, it was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites and in 1993 was listed as a Russian Cultural Heritage site.
