Melina Mercouri, Greei
Melina Mercouri was born in Athens, Greece on October 18, 1920. She was a popular actress both in the United States and internationally. She was nominated (and chosen for some) for just about every acting award there is. She was in movies such as Never On Sunday and Sweet Bird of Your, and many more in the US and Greece.
An early woman activist, she was elected to the Greek Parliament in 1977. Later Miss Mercouri was to become the first woman to hold a Senior cabinet post "Minister of Culture" in the Greek government. She served until her death in 1994.
While acting, and then while in the Grecian political system, Ms Mercouri was very popular with the people of Greece. She was enthusiastically proud of Greece and it became her goal to do all she could for it and help the people. Her beautiful and proud statue stands prominently in the Plaka district of Athens. The people of the Plaka give credit to Melina for saving the Plaka from deterioration, bringing it back to live, and preserving it.The Plaka is a charming area, with the Parthenon looming over it, with small restaurants and bars and shops. Much of it is a walking street, so it’s generally quiet without the roar of motorcyles and cars.
