Horse and Jockey
This is a bronze statue of a horse and jockey in the National Archeological Museum in Athens, Greece. It’s known as the Artemision Jockey because it was retrieved in pieces from a shipwreck off Cape Artemision in Euboea, a Greek island. It was found circa 140 BC. Folks, that’s old. Finally in 1928 and 1937, it was brought up and was pieced back together in 1971 with the support of an American lady and the Psichas Foundation.
The jockey is probably African in origin. Apparently it wasn’t an easy job for the jockey nor the horse. It’s said the jockey’s face is contorted in “agony and passion”. We assume the horse has the same feelings. It’s believed the jockey held the reins of the galloping horse in his left hand and a whip in his right (thus the horse’s agony….) I like the way the red wall shines through the horse’s empty eye sockets..showing some amount of feeling.
