The Wooden Bicycle
This is a classic example of ‘make do’. Can’t afford or get a bike? Build a bike. No tires, metal, parts, handlebars? Carve it out of wood.
I took this picture in Uganda. I was in deep, no towns, no paved roads Uganda. People here make do. They don’t have money for bicycles, most have never been to any town, they don’t have Amazon. They have their hands and ingenuity. Thus this bicycle. And those little boys were pretty happy sharing their wooden bicycle.
This very keepable picture is a scan of a film photograph from 1994 when I backpacked across Uganda. We backpacked through the back roads, not on a tour to the tourist spots.
