This brown pelican was flying over Fort Jefferson, located in the Dry Tortugas a hundred miles or so off Key West, Florida.
Pelicans are a genus of large water birds that makes up the family Pelecanidae. They have a long beak and a large throat pouch for catching prey and draining water from the scooped up contents before swallowing. They’re pretty common and is found on the Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to the mouth of the Amazon River.
