I was close enough to this wild elephant that the photo is not cropped at all (400mm lens). Her eyelashes are astonishing but in the hot sun of the Kalahari, they act as sun shades.
Elephants are of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Male African elephants are the largest terrestrial animals and can reach a height of 13 feet and weigh 15,000 pounds. All elephants have distinctive features. The most memorable of these features is long trunk which is used for many purposes, such as breathing, lifting water and grasping objects. Their incisors grow into tusks, which can serve as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. Elephants' large ear flaps help to control their body temperature. Their pillar-like legs can carry their great weight.
