I hope this is a dahlia. It was in somebody else's garden so I can't be sure, but it looks like one I found on the web (the Arabian Night Dahlia). The dahlia comes from a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico. It's a member of the Asteraceae (or Compositae), dicotyledonous plants.
