Protective Mama Elephant in Black and White
We came around a curve in the Kalahari bush in Botswana and suddenly encountered this mama elephant. She would not hesitate to charge if she felt her calf was threatened. Usually it's a mock charge and luckily it was this time.
Elephants are of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Two species are traditionally recognised, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). Male African elephants are the largest terrestrial animals and can reach a height of 13 feet and weigh 15,000 pounds. All elephants have distinctive features. The most memorable of these features is long trunk which is used for many purposes, such as breathing, lifting water and grasping objects. Their incisors grow into tusks, which can serve as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. Elephants' large ear flaps help to control their body temperature. Their pillar-like legs can carry their great weight. African elephants have larger ears and concave backs while Asian elephants have smaller ears and convex or level backs. (Info from Wikipedia)
