Sunset on Maine's Bass Harbor Lighthouse
You have to crawl over a lot of sharp rocks and boulders and tidal pools, photo equipment in hand, to catch this vision of the sun setting behind the cliff where Bass Harbor Lighthouse sits, protecting the boats out on the Atlantic Ocean.
I'm in Acadia National Park which is just about as far east and north as you can go and still be in the Lower 48 of the United States. This time of year, you'll be joining about a million of your closest friends, too, all trying to see the beauty of Acadia. So it's a challenge not to come home with pictures of people you don't know who've walked into your picture. No problem - they're just as welcome there as I am (really???). You just have to learn how to use the Lasso tool in Photoshop to disappear them :)
Acadia Park encompasses more than 47,000 acres, 30,300 of which are on Mount Desert Island. Acadia is one of the smaller national parks in the country, yet it attracts nearly 3 million visitors per year.
Getting to this specific spot is a little dicey with your hands full of tripod, camera gear, bag of lenses. You do NOT want to keep going back to the car to get something you didn't think you'd need so you bring it all. Down a rather steep rocky path, across big boulders. Slippery big boulders. I proved that by being the first to fall. And fall. And fall. Slippin' and slidin' all the way. Oh, my aching back! But most of my gear survived and that's what's important! .... My brand new tripod took a beating, tho.
